Sun, Stone, and Shadows Preface Mexico and the United States share a long border and a common history. Although our two nations remain separate and independent, they are also deeply interrelated not only through economic ties, political cooperation, and cultural exchange but also by flesh and blood through the many millions of Mexican-Americans who personally embody the intermingling of our two great and complex countries. There is perhaps no better way for two nations to learn about one another than through sharing their stories. Sun, Stone, and Shadows presents a superb selection of the finest Mexican short stories of the twentieth century. No one can read this arresting volume without experiencing the wonder and surprise of discovery. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of literary reading in American popular culture. Reading at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading in America, a 2004 NEA report, identified a critical decline in reading for pleasure among American adults. The Big Read addresses this issue by bringing communities together to read, discuss, and celebrate books and writers from American and world literature. A great book combines enlightenment with enchantment. It awakens our imagination and enlarges our humanity. It can even offer harrowing insights that somehow console and comfort us. This 60-minute documentary was produced and directed by Henry Chalfant (of Style Wars fame) and Rita Fecher. Set in the South Bronx of the early 80’s, Flyin’ Cut Sleeves, completed in 1993, portrays street gang presidents in the Bronx. The documentary project grew out of the experiences of Rita Fecher, the film’s co-producer, who taught in a South Bronx school in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, became intimately involved with the gangs, their leaders, and the leaders’ families and began to document their lives. Their world was the streets, set against a backdrop of uprooted families, cultural alienation, drugs and violence. Doors open @ 6PM and the film screening will take place from 6:30-730PM. A panel discussion will take place immediately following the film where the audience can meet and greet the producers Henry Chalfant and Rita Fecher as well as some members of the original cast. FREE. An adult must accompany anyone under 16 years of age. Light refreshments will be served. NEA Big Read 2010 “Sun, Stone, and Shadows” books and promotional materials will also be distributed.
