NEA Big Read 2010

Sun, Stone, and Shadows

Preface

Mexico and the United States share a long border and a common history. Although our two nations remain separate and independent, they are also deeply interrelated not only through economic ties, political cooperation, and cultural exchange but also by flesh and blood through the many millions of Mexican-Americans who personally embody the intermingling of our two great and complex countries.

There is perhaps no better way for two nations to learn about one another than through sharing their stories. Sun, Stone, and Shadows presents a superb selection of the finest Mexican short stories of the twentieth century. No one can read this arresting volume without experiencing the wonder and surprise of discovery.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of literary reading in American popular culture. Reading at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading in America, a 2004 NEA report, identified a critical decline in reading for pleasure among American adults. The Big Read addresses this issue by bringing communities together to read, discuss, and celebrate books and writers from American and world literature.

A great book combines enlightenment with enchantment. It awakens our imagination and enlarges our humanity. It can even offer harrowing insights that somehow console and comfort us. Whether you’re a regular reader already or making up for lost time, thank you for joining The Big Read

Sleeping Dogs Films and MVD Visual in collaboration with THE POINT CDC are proud to present the screening of Flyin’ Cut Sleeves on Friday, March 26, 2010 at the Live from the Edge Theater from 6-9PM.  This 60-minute documentary was produced and directed by Henry Chalfant (of Style Wars fame) and Rita Fecher.

Set in the South Bronx of the early 80’s, Flyin’ Cut Sleeves, completed in 1993, portrays street gang presidents in the Bronx. The documentary project grew out of the experiences of Rita Fecher, the film’s co-producer, who taught in a South Bronx school in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, became intimately involved with the gangs, their leaders, and the leaders’ families and began to document their lives. Their world was the streets, set against a backdrop of uprooted families, cultural alienation, drugs and violence.

Doors open @ 6PM and the film screening will take place from 6:30-730PM.  A panel discussion will take place immediately following the film where the audience can meet and greet the producers Henry Chalfant and Rita Fecher as well as some members of the original cast.

FREE.  An adult must accompany anyone under 16 years of age.  Light refreshments will be served.  NEA Big Read 2010 “Sun, Stone, and Shadows” books and promotional materials will also be distributed.

The POINT's annual Town Hall is our chance to get the neighborhood together, and touch base on everything happening in and around Hunts Point that The POINT is involved with.  We will give a short presentation on each project or campaign that is currently active, and then ask for feedback from participants to see if we are truly reflecting the community's needs and desires.  During the second half of the meeting, while a free meal is being served, attendees will be able to walk around the atrium and visit tables with more information on each of the issues brought up earlier in order to learn more, give feedback, or get involved in our efforts.
Because of all the amazing work happening this year, we have invited other groups from the area to participate as well and share with the crowd the projects that they are working on as well.
The entire evening will kick off with a wonderful performance by youth in The POINT's Cirque du Monde program!

Some of the topics being covered will include:

  • Updates on NYOFCo and the City's proposal to build a new jail in Hunts Point
  • The creation of Hunts Point's own Farm Share  / CSA courtesy of Hunts Point Alliance for Children and the BLK ProjeK
  • Upcoming special events in the Hunts Point area
  • A new Hunts Point High School
  • Where to get training for green-collar jobs
  • Much, much, more!
