Live From the Edge Theatre
THE POINT's artistic centerpiece is Live From The Edge Theatre, named for its history of presenting edgy works. This Obie and Bessie Award-winning, 100-seat presenting house black-box theatre serves audiences of all ages.
I. Core Events
Latin Jazz Series
This live musical celebration honors legendary artists who have made a powerful impact in shaping both Latin and African-American music and dance in America.
Mambo to Hip Hop
Celebrating the art and culture that has emerged from the South Bronx community in the postwar era, this multimedia project includes the 2007 Alma Award (televised Latino Oscars)-winning documentary film From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale, a permanent photographic exhibit, live performance events, an educational curriculum and neighborhood tour.
Young Audience Series
Live From the Edge offers youth matinee performances and/or lecture demonstrations with companies visiting THE POINT to public schools and youth organizations.
Hunts Point Summer Festival & Fish Parade
Celebrating the Hunts Point community and waterfront, this annual event gathers an audience of over 1,000 residents, business owners and elected officials to view a costumed procession through the streets of Hunts Point culminating in a full afternoon of live entertainment and family-friendly fun!
II. Support for the Arts
These programs offer a unique artistic outlet to artists, particularly Bronx artists of color, whose access to the arts is often limited by external forces such as economic environment and geographic location. Programs are open to artists of all backgrounds working in any artistic genre.
Artists in Residence
THE POINT’s Artists in Residence have access to Live From the Edge Theatre and supporting studio spaces as rehearsal and performance spaces and contribute to the organization’s Youth Development Program through arts workshops for young people.
Space Subsidy Program
The program aims to support the development and performance objectives of emerging actors, playwrights and theatre groups by providing discounted or free performance and/or rehearsal space in THE POINT’s theatre and supporting studio spaces. Ticket Subsidy Program
THE POINT offers subsidized admission rates to performances at Live From the Edge. Reduced rates are particularly aimed at Hunts Point residents and young audiences.
III. Theatre Education
THE POINT engages young people in drama workshops and live performance with professional teaching artists via the After School Arts Residency Program. In addition, THE POINT's Theatre Apprenticeship Program offers teens the opportunity to learn technical theater skills including lighting and sound design and act as stage hands in Live From the Edge Theatre.
