“Solid Ground: A Play About Landing on Your Feet”
by Mass Transit Street Theater
In the Bronx, the percentage of teens experiencing relationship abuse still exceeds that of the entire city of NY.
In the words of Aurelis, a member of our company, “I have friends who stay with partners who verbally abuse them because they are accustomed to the relationship. We need to inspire our youth to take the steps they need to be safe, so that we can reduce teen suicides.”
In January of 2011, Mass Transit Street Theatre assembled a group of extraordinarily talented young poets, hip-hop dancers, and actors to develop a theater piece about teen relationships. We came up with, “Solid Ground: A Play About Landing on Your Feet”
Solid Ground is based on true stories of teens growing up in NYC. Using music, dance, and poetry, it explores the effects of drug addiction, domestic abuse, homophobia, and relationship violence on young people in The Bronx today. It celebrates the power friendship, creativity and community contribution in the face of these devastating challenges.
In May of 2011, we toured a number of Bronx community centers with our work-in-progress. We were received with great enthusiasm by audiences of young people throughout the Borough. We found that we had created a powerful piece that resonated deeply with all who attended.
This spring we are presenting “Solid Ground” at Hostos Community Center for Arts and Culture in a “state of the art” 365 seat theater to middle and high school students from public schools throughout the Bronx and NYC. Each performance will be followed by a “talk back” between actor/authors and audience members.
In the words of playwright and author, John Jiler, who attended one of our performances at Hostos,
“I walked into this shattering, transformative, exhilarating play. It was just as thrilling to watch the audience of the few hundred public middle and high school kids. This wasn’t just theatre with the potential to change lives; it ACTUALLY changed lives, right before our eyes. It’s impossible to believe that some of them didn’t immediately go home with a new strength about being abused, being gay, being unpopular, or having the nerve to follow their dreams. They watched an amazing company of young actors, dancers and poets and said “that could be me,” or just as often “that IS me!”
Each teacher who brings students to see “Solid Ground” will be offered an accompanying study guide designed to identify resilience and problem solving strategies used by characters in the play and to encourage students to apply those same strategies to there own lives.
As school budgets continue to shrink, we have committed to offering our work to middle and high school students free of charge this season in order to reach more young people in an increasingly underserved area of the city.
With your help, we hope to continue to expand our audiences for “Solid Ground” in the Lovinger Theater in fiscal year 2013-2014.
