Workshop Details: Bronx Is Breathing: Reimagining a Cleaner Hunts Point

Welcome to the Hunts Point peninsula in the South Bronx, which houses the largest wholesale food hub in the nation, nine waste transfer facilities, and several large recycling yards. It also features a vibrant residential community of 13,000 residents. Unfortunately, this area also faces environmental justice issues, with 40% of residents living below the poverty line and high asthma rates among children aged 5-14.

The solution proposed in this project aims to tackle these disparities while maintaining the essential freight activities that power the local economy. By leveraging battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and public charging infrastructure, we aim to improve air quality and generate economic opportunities for the South Bronx.

Through partnerships with local fleets and stakeholders, we will deploy a BEV refuse truck, refrigerated BEVs, and establish a new charging hub for the Food Distribution Center. This will showcase truly zero-emissions solutions in the food and waste sectors of Hunts Point. The project will also focus on strategies to lower barriers to electric vehicle adoption in under-resourced communities, while expanding access to commercial BEVs in the short term and building a sustainable EV ecosystem in Hunts Point. In the long term, this project will serve as a model for similar communities, helping to accelerate EV adoption, reduce health risks, and support economic self-determination.
