THE POINT
Spring 2022

ICP at THE POINT directly serves over 100 students through two tiers of pre-teen and teen classes, as well as weekly open labs. In four 10-session terms, ICP teaching artists provide instruction in the fundamentals of photography alongside writing and public speaking assignments. In addition to final presentations each term, students are also featured in an annual exhibition of their photographs in the on-site Vantage Point gallery. In 2005, the program received the Coming Up Taller Award, the nation's highest honor bestowed by the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

My photos are centered around the beauty found in nature. I usually gravitate towards nature because I like the fact that it just exists but you can make it your own. You can grow things. You can plant things. Nature is all around us.

Nayomi Montes

My work fits into the themes “toys” and “friendship”. For this project I used two plushies, an elephant named Ellen and a pink puff named Kirby. I am telling the origin story of how they turned from enemies to friends.

I was inspired by our guest artist Isabel Figueroa, who makes photographs using a Lego stormtrooper named Jerry to share their adventures. I love playing with plushies so I had fun making these photos.

This class has helped me express my inner Photographer! I like many things about photography like using my imagination and creativity. I normally don’t take photos like this and prefer video, but this class has shown me pictures are more than they seem. I like the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” because it’s true.

Svähä Williams

My photography style surrounds the themes of community and everyday life. My photos are mostly of my neighborhood and the people I know. I am constantly inspired by the community around me and love to use photography as a way to capture their story.
I enjoy taking self-portraits using different angles, lighting, and filters. Photography helps me pay attention to the details in life. Ms. Abigail has been a great motivator for me because she always provided good feedback and ideas that has helped me shape
my work.

Karmanie Minnis

A little bit of color
A little bit of shine
Every  photo is calm
They all are so divine

I love everything i make
Even a picture or a cake
It is so very fun
I never feel done

It is a calming act
something that won’t make me sad

Josiah Pinero

My photography project is mostly non-fiction. The subjects of my photos are usually stuff that I love in and around the city. The kind of things that inspire me to make pictures are transportation, buildings and nature. I imagined myself as an experienced photographer creating the images, which helped me put more focus into what I was doing.

What I like about photography is that it can help you remember. For example, if you saw a falcon hunting in New York City. They are pretty rare to see during those times. What if that was the only falcon you saw? You wouldn’t want to forget it so you take a picture.

These images represent the Bronx’s street art culture and community. I like to capture vivid colors, creative shapes/ designs, and inspirational messages. Street art has taught me about many cool artists that have created pieces that express political, cultural and sometimes even religious views.  Artists such as Jean Michael Basquiat, Banksy, and Tats Cru “The Mural Kings” are all well known for their remarkable talents and works that has inspired me to take these photos.

Photography has taught me a lot about different cultures and ideas that come from the streets of New York City. It allows me to capture moments, memories and feelings that I encounter in my everyday life.  ICP at THE POINT has taught me to express my ideas through photography and gives me space to create visual masterpieces.
